Art in the Schools Program

Wednesday, October 14, 2009.

For one hour on October 14, a group of five kindergarten students at New Hartford Elementary participated in the first after school “Art in the Schools” class organized and conducted by NHAL members.

Member Bonnie Boyle then led the students in two art activities. They used a straw to “blow”a line of paint into tree and bush shapes, filling in the background with watercolor. A second painting was done in crayon resist with “wet on wet” watercolor.

Lucille then showed examples of her own subject choices such as her grandchildren, pets and the places she loves. One landscape painting by Lucille served as the focus for the kindergarteners to identify line, shape, texture, color and tonal value.

The session ended with a reading of Leo Lionni’s Matthew’s Dream, the story of a mouse who experiences art through a trip to an art museum and dreams of becoming an artist.

Artist Lucille Delaney told the children about her best advice when deciding what to paint: “Paint what you love and then you’ll do your best work”.
